I remember a time before my BA where I believed that my route in life was leading to the exciting (and completely unrealistic) role of the advertising creative. That classic misconceived aspiration of a younger version of Mel Gibson in What Women Want.
Through my studies I soon realised that design is so much more than the ergonomics of a chair or arranging text and image in a way that makes some sort of aesthetic appeal.
I chose this course because I became increasingly aware and fascinated by designs impact on society. I am intrigued by how design criticism can assess this impact and force reflection on a profession that is so closely intertwined with society and the people that exist within it.
I am already learning so much about myself as a writer and about current thinking, theory and practice surrounding design criticism. I hope the knowledge that I gain from the course will inform both my written and practical work with the ultimate intention of becoming a more knowledgeable Writer, a more critical designer and a more incisive Critic.
