Seeing Voices: Inside BT Archives

What's in an archive? For six months, DWC students worked with BT Archives to explore the artefacts and objects within the 2.5 kilometer archive in Holborn, London. We went in, not knowing what to expect, with few ideas about telephones. We came out with a new vocabulary for communications and an understanding that archives are more than a place for the past to exist - they are venues for stories to be discovered, explored and disseminated.

Each student contributed a 1,000-word essay to Field Study 13: Inside BT Archives, which was made possible by the Photography and the Archive Research Centre, based at the London College of Communication. The students also curated Seeing Voices: Inside BT Archives, a two-week exhibition that explored the definition of an archive through the lenses of each of their essay topics.
